Since the launch of this platform I have been inundated by well meaning Nigerians to initiate an article on bleaching and its negative effects.
Skin bleaching is the ultimate sign that an individual suffers from inferiority complex. In my honest opinion,I have never come across any skin colour on a person that I would describe as negatively but I will tell you for fact that I meet negative and nasty people daily. It all comes down to applying natural remedies required for maintaining flawless skin quality. It is not and has never been about the colour of the skin but the quality of the skin that matters.I have lived most of my life amongst the Caucasians and I can attest to the fact that their colour isn`t better than ours and neither is ours better than theirs.

Toyin Lawani

Some people insinuate that she supplies all the facilities including Egyptian cream, injections/needles and salon for the purpose of bleaching.

Just what I heard o.NO BE ME TALK AM O.It is out there and everyone must have heard it by now so this is not news.

The quality of a person`s character is what defines a person and not the colour of a person`s skin.

The negative effects of skin bleaching ranging from the minor to more grievous ones are uncountable but I will mention just a few.If you are a member of the bleachers inc. Nigeria who have been too busy(you know hmmm, doing your normal aristo runs, winks.Yeah, I know man must wack and buy new hair) to google the negative effects of bleaching, don`t fret because I have taken my sometime to do that for you and here they are below.

  •     Dark grey spots
  •     Skin cancer
  •     Acne
  •     Swelling of the skin
  •     Thinning of the skin
  •     Cataracts
  •     Setting down of fat on face, chest, upper back and stomach
  •     Increase in appetite and weight gain
  •     Osteoporosis
  •     Neurological and kidney damage due to high level of mercury used in the creams
  •     Psychiatric disorders
  •     Severe birth defects
  •     Asthma
  •     Liver damage

Now, if these negative effects mentioned here aren`t scary enough to deter ladies from bleaching then I don`t know what else will be because these effects are quite scary, if you ask me.No man or anything is worth going through this risk.Besides,no real man needs a woman obsessed with bleaching in his life.

And,oh when you are bleaching,it becomes quite obvious to the rest of us so what is the point?

Please see below the members of the bleachers inc. Nigeria. That these ladies belong to bleachers Inc.Nigeria is not the ultimate indication that they are bleaching unless you reckon so but no be me talk am o

Again,I am not saying these ladies below are bleaching but if you say so,you are on your own cos me I go deny you when some of these girls` aristos come after you with a sledge hammer.

I must stress that I know for a fact that one of these ladies is in a committed relationship so she no send Aristos o.
At a recent Lenten season programme organised by the wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, at the Government House, Dr. Nike Omotoyosi, a dermatologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, spoke extensively on “The Harmful Effects of Skin Bleaching”.  According to her, Nigeria has the highest number of people who indulge in skin bleaching. She attributed this to a number of factors including portrayal of white skinned women as beautiful by the media.
A  report published in 2013, by The World Health Organisation, also said 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin-lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. The figure compares with 59 percent in Togo, and 27 percent in Senegal.
Read the full report of Dr. Nike Omotoyosi speech here.

Questions:

1. Agreed, many women in Nigeria use skin whitening products, but do you think 77% is near accurate?
2a. Is skin lightening the same as Skin bleaching?
2b. What is the difference, if any?

The Osun State Police Command yesterday said that a suspected kidnapper, Segun Akinwale, arrested last Thursday around Alekuwodo Area of Osogbo, Osun State capital has died.

Confirming the development to newsmen in Osogbo yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Folasade Odoro, said the suspect gave up the ghost while receiving treatment, having been rescued by the police from a mob attack when he was caught. She said: “He was rescued and brought to the police but he gave up the ghost when receiving treatment.”
While warning residents against jungle justice, Odoro said anybody caught in acts capable of endangering peace of the state would be prosecuted.
Three suspected kidnappers were set ablaze at different locations between Thursday and Friday last week in Osogbo.
Some residents of the area where the suspect was caught claimed he was behaving like a mad man and that he had already kidnapped three children before he was apprehended.

Dangote Group has donated 12 trailer loads of relief materials worth N40m to the Benue State Government for distribution to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
The materials, according to the group, are meant to support the ongoing effort of the state government to bring succour to the victims of the recent crisis that affected some parts of the state.
Speaking at the occasion for the formal handing over of the items to the displaced persons in Makurdi,

President and Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said: “We have a very cordial relationship with our host communities in Benue, and it is only natural (that) we identify with them at a time like this. What has happened is unfortunate and we empathise with all the affected people.”
Dangote, who was represented by his Special Adviser, Mr. Joseph Makoju, said that it was unfortunate that the crisis happened, adding that the insurgency was diversionary to the government’s effort at bringing the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
He said: “Governor Gabriel Suswam’s administration has done a lot to improve the well-being of the good people of Benue State through massive upgrade of infrastructure, empowerment of rural farmers and funding of the educational sector. The infrastructural development in Benue State has been significant and his love for his people is unparalleled.”
He said the relief materials was part of his company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, programme in the state that covers – health, education, women and youth empowerment and disaster relief.
He said in Gboko alone, the group has over the years built blocks of classrooms, constructed water boreholes and provide electricity in communities around the cement plant.
Dangote added that the company gives annual scholarship grants running into millions of naira to the Gboko community.
While thanking the donor, Governor Gabriel Suswam, who inspected the relief items, said he was overwhelmed by the donation.
He expressed the state’s appreciation, lauded the CSR activities of the group and urged other corporate bodies to emulate the deeds of the organisation by giving back to the society.

Personally I am against office romance but since we have to talk about it let’s get into it. Sometimes when you spend long hours with someone you tend to grow feelings for the person
The most common cliché is that of the boss with his secretary but there are many other examples of work-based relationships from the snog at the Christmas party to getting frisky in the supplies cupboard. Work-based relationships aren’t always superficial and it is almost inevitable that at some point in your career you will have a crush on someone at work. Here are some tips to help make sure you don’t end up wanting to resign if it doesn’t work out.

Do:
- Concentrate on building a good working relationship first – see how you cope with decision making, conflict etc. in the work environment
- Study them as a person – do they have qualities you admire or is it just a physical attraction
- Make sure the feeling is mutual – making a pass at someone who isn’t interested – at worst  it could lead to you being accused of intimate harassment or at best come across as a bit of an office sleaze and liable to being gossiped about
- Consider how the company would view a relationship between you two and reconsider if it could jeopardise either of your positions
- Remember a crush is just a crush and many of them will pass of their own accord if you don’t act on them
- Arrange to discuss any chance of a possible romance away from the office
- Play the tape forward and ask yourself how you will feel if it doesn’t work out or you get rejected
- Accept a no as a no and don’t push, persuade or try to cajole someone into changing their mind if they don’t feel the same way
- Try and maintain a professional standard in your work no matter how strong your feelings are – this will help avoid you getting into trouble with management
- Give things time to develop – if you have a crush that lasts longer than about three months then it may be that you are developing a deeper connection with someone
- Ask yourself if you want a partner who you share your whole life with? They could be with you for 8 hours a day at work and then again when you get home – are you the sort of person that would thrive on this or not?
- Be discreet and never discuss the details of your dates with other work colleagues

Don’t :
 - Go straight to a colleague with your feelings – talk it through with someone away from the situation first
- Drop hints, come on too heavy or make lewd remarks about someone’s appearance
- Conduct your relationship on company time
- Tell your other work mates if you ask someone out or if a colleague asks you on a date – don’t boast about your pulling power or make fun of someone else attempts
- Get involved with someone who is already in a relationship
- Flirt outrageously at work, it can be embarrassing for people around you both and will leave you feeling a bit red faced if nothing comes of it
- Have sex on the first date – or first few dates – it is harder to get out of a relationship with someone you work with as you can’t just not call them so you need to be absolutely sure you both want the relationship to continue before you get physical
- Use your  expense accounts for dates
- Use the company in-house email systems for personal correspondence
- Mistake a passion for a shared project as a passion for each other –  if you are working for long hours towards a shared goal it may seem that your colleague is the only person who understands you but that isn’t necessarily the basis for a lasting relationship – will you both be taking your work home with you?

What is Karma? Karma is the Sanskrit word for action. It is equivalent to Newton’s law of ‘every action must have a reaction’. When we think, speak or act we initiate a force that will react accordingly. This returning force maybe modified, changed or suspended, but most people will not be able eradicate it.

12 Little Known Laws of Karma (That Will Change Your Life)This law of cause and effect is not punishment, but is wholly for the sake of education or learning.
A person may not escape the consequences of his actions, but he will suffer only if he himself has made the conditions ripe for his suffering. Ignorance of the law is no excuse whether the laws are man-made or universal.
To stop being afraid and to start being empowered in the worlds of karma and reincarnation, here is what you need to know about karmic laws.
 1. THE GREAT LAW
- "As you sow, so shall you reap". This is also known as the "Law of Cause and Effect".
- Whatever we put out in the Universe is what comes back to us.
- If what we want is Happiness, Peace, Love, Friendship… Then we should BE Happy, Peaceful, Loving and a True Friend.
 2. THE LAW OF CREATION
- Life doesn’t just HAPPEN, it requires our participation.
- We are one with the Universe, both inside and out.
- Whatever surrounds us gives us clues to our inner state.
- BE yourself, and surround yourself with what you want to have present in your Life.
 3. THE LAW OF HUMILITY
- What you refuse to accept, will continue for you.
- If what we see is an enemy, or someone with a character trait that we find to be negative, then we ourselves are not focused on a higher level of existence.
 4. THE LAW OF GROWTH
- "Wherever you go, there you are".
- For us to GROW in Spirit, it is we who must change – and not the people, places or things around us.
- The only given we have in our lives is OURSELVES and that is the only factor we have control over.
- When we change who and what we are within our heart our life follows suit and changes too.
 5. THE LAW OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me.
- We mirror what surrounds us – and what surrounds us mirrors us; this is a Universal Truth.
- We must take responsibility what is in our life.
 6. THE LAW OF CONNECTION
- Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the Universe is connected.
- Each step leads to the next step, and so forth and so on.
- Someone must do the initial work to get a job done.
- Neither the first step nor the last are of greater significance,
- As they were both needed to accomplish the task.
- Past-Present-Future they are all connected…
 7. THE LAW OF FOCUS
- You can not think of two things at the same time.
- When our focus is on Spiritual Values, it is impossible for us to have lower thoughts such as greed or anger.
 8. THE LAW OF GIVING AND HOSPITALITY
- If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth.
- Here is where we put what we CLAIM that we have learned, into actual PRACTICE.
 9. THE LAW OF HERE AND NOW
- Looking backward to examine what was, prevents us from being totally in the HERE AND NOW.
- Old thoughts, old patterns of behavior, old dreams…
- Prevent us from having new ones.
 10. THE LAW OF CHANGE
- History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path.
 11. THE LAW OF PATIENCE AND REWARD
- All Rewards require initial toil.
- Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent toil.
- True joy follows doing what we’re suppose to be doing, and waiting for the reward to come in on its own time.
 12. THE LAW OF SIGNIFICANCE AND INSPIRATION
- You get back from something whatever YOU have put into it.
- The true value of something is a direct result of the energy and intent that is put into it.
- Every personal contribution is also a contribution to the Whole.
- Lack luster contributions have no impact on the Whole, nor do they work to diminish it.
- Loving contributions bring life to, and inspire, the Whole.

Barcelona star Dani Alves responded to a racist taunt in the most incredible way during a march yesterday Sunday April 27th

While playing for his team against Villareal, a spectator threw a banana at him as he tried to take a corner kick. What do you think Dani did? He casually picked up the banana, peeled it, eat the banana, threw away the peel, and then completed the kick…
This move has left many people in shock and Dani is getting a lot of praise for how he handled it.
This is not the first time the Brazilian footballer will face racism on the pitch. He complained about it last year after being taunted by monkey chants from sections of the crowd during a match at Real Madrid.
Racism in football is becoming an issue in Europe and enough is not being done to stop it. Dani is a star! Hopefully, he made the person who threw the banana feel like stupid!

Huge crowds have gathered in Vatican City to see a historic ceremony where two popes – John Paul II and John XXIII – are due to be declared saints, the BBC reports.
A Mass co-celebrated by Pope Francis and his predecessor Benedict is due to be watched by one million pilgrims and a vast TV and radio audience.
Nearly 100 foreign delegations are attending, including royal dignitaries and heads of state and government.
It is the first time two popes have been canonised at the same time.

The BBC says the move is being seen as an attempt to unite conservative and reformist camps within the Roman Catholic Church. Pilgrims have been pouring into Rome and special bus, train and boat services ferried many more into the city early on Sunday morning for the two-hour ceremony which starts at 10:00 local (0800 GMT).
Some had bagged places to sleep overnight as close as possible to St Peter’s Square, hoping to be among the first in when it opens to the public.
Giant screens have also been erected in nearby streets and elsewhere in the city for those unable to get into the square.
“We’ve been counting down the days. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said one pilgrim from Poland, John Paul II’s home country.
“We’re already hoarse from singing,” he told AFP.

Aww you will just love this. A lot of people flew to Dubai to support Tiwa and her man. And I also heard she gave a speech that made a lot of ladies cry. Part of the speech read; “Sometimes when you listen to what society says you miss what God has to say to you.” Another exciting thing that happened was when MAVIN Records CEO, Don Jazzy gave the couple a brand new SUV as their wedding gift. How beautiful. More pictures after the cut.

Former Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State   in this encounter with Saturday Vanguard speaks on his legacy, life after governance, APGA and says he pities President Jonathan…. How has life been outside government?
I am one person who had never missed any post I occupied in the past. Life itself is transient and so is everything else. It is those that see only permanence in appointment that are disturbed once they are relinquished of that either through efflusion of time or any other means. All I have tried to do is to live my normal life wherever I found myself such that on leaving, I will not miss anything.
When I was the governor, I did not use sirens, I carried my bags, checked into hotels myself, bought my tickets and did my bookings. I queued like other Nigerians and flew business and economy classes. Now that I am no longer the governor, basically the same life style goes on. There is nothing to miss. I am one person who does not eat as if I would die tomorrow or build edifices as if I would live forever.

Recently, against your principle, you took the title of Okwute and received award from Champion newspaper.  Was this a change of principle or what?

First of all, let me say that no principle is cast in iron. Events dictate principles at all times. Having said this, let me set the records straight, I have never been against granting honours and dignities to people. All I said was that I would not suffer the epidemic of receiving awards whilst I was the governor as I believe that genuine honours come when one is out of office. Thus, I had to reject hundreds of awards that came by my way. Occasionally I received some. However, at the end of my tenure, all the Traditional Rulers in Anambra came together and said they would honour me with the title of “Okwute” for my service to the State. I accepted it. I also accepted the honour from Champion, because, coming after my tenure, it was evidently not informed by any consideration. This is my stand.

There are concerns that the music industry has been over-run with drugs and alcohol amid a culture of ‘self-destruction’ among young male and female musicians and entertainers alike. Many have embraced the dark side of the music industry and ended up in more trouble than they courted.

Does the music industry overly glamorize and perpetuate the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol? An entertainer operates in an environment that gives positive reinforcement to damaging behaviours like none other, and hundreds of thousands -find themselves coping with the fallout from that. Celebrities may be at special risk but speaking with some stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment industry, they revealed that they are addressing the menace.

The shocking stories are familiar – lives being cut short and dreams shattered by costant alcohol and drug abuse. Cocaine contributed to Whitney Houston’s death. She drowned in her bathtub in a Beverly Hills hotel. Michael Jackson died not far from the same location in 2009 after his doctor administered a lethal dose of the sedative Propofol. British singer Amy Winehouse was troubled by addiction and died of alcohol poisoning.

In recent years, there have been excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol among Nigerian entertainers but many of them are still grappling to manage its damaging effects. Experts say alcohol and drug abuse is a problem in the general population but entertainers are especially vulnerable because of the long hours on the road and the intense demands of keeping up with performaces. There’s a lot of down time, a lot of traveling, a lot of boredom, a lot of sitting, a lot of doing nothing and more.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a special risk for those who find fame and fortune as performers. Some people around the artistes can be enablers and others may turn a blind eye to the addiction. Successful artistes are creative and driven, and some have underlying emotional problems that fuel addiction and need treatment.
Some young musicians think drug use is part of being creative. The availability of the so-called ‘cool factor’ which is quite disapproving, play a bigger part in the entertainment business than other professions.

The industry is less tolerant of drug use now than a few years ago. Those who work with celebrities say the key to dealing with drug abuse is early intervention, effective treatment and a support system. They say recovery can be a lifelong process.
In the music industry, there is majority because they see it as a source of inspiration. Music is one of the most influential art forms of today’s society, and drugs, especially to today’s youth, just add to the attractiveness of it all.

According to a report by Punch, the UK and US government have joined the search for the 234 abducted schoolgirls from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, by Boko Haram men.
On Friday April 25th, the British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said the UK had begun talks with Nigeria over the incident. (Some mothers of the abducted school girls pictured above)

“The appalling abduction in northern Nigeria on April 14 is a stark reminder of the threat of sexual violence faced by women in conflict prone areas. I am very concerned that the majority of the girls are still missing. I spoke to Nigerian Foreign Minister, Wali, about this case on 18 April, and we are talking to Nigerian authorities about how best to assist in their efforts to secure the girls’ release and bring those responsible to justice.” Hague said. Continue…
Punch is also reporting that on Friday, the Nigerian Government also enlisted the intelligence services of the United States in the search for the abducted girls.
A competent security source said the Federal Government would rely on the higher technology of the US and UK to facilitate the search for the missing girls.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, stated that there would be no physical presence of operatives of the Western agencies in the operation to rescue the girls.
The source stated, “The whole emphasis is on intelligence gathering; and that is why the Federal Government is contacting the US and the UK to assist in the area of intelligence gathering. Another thing you must know is that several arrests have been made, and a lot of efforts are being made.
“The security guard at the school in Chibok is being quizzed and some people from the community too have been arrested,” the source said.

Kim K and and her third husband-to-be Kanye West are planning not one, not two, but three wedding ceremonies…

According to Radar Online the couple plan to have two ceremonies in France and one in Southern California for legal purposes. The Paris wedding date is rumored to be May 24th.
To avoid long lines and red tape, a source tells RadarOnline.com, the couple’s lawyers recommended they hold a civil ceremony in the United States prior to their French nuptials on May 24.
“Typically, the U.S. recognizes citizens getting married in France, but dealing with a foreign government and paperwork could be a nightmare,” the insider explains. “So just to make sure it’s legal, Kim and Kanye will first be having a civil ceremony in Southern California.”
Next, the couple will cross the Atlantic for their dream ceremony in Paris— and French law dictates that there be two wedding ceremonies.

Whether or not you’re happy being single, the process of dating is stressful and things rarely work out immediately.

Dating is a complicated venture.
Much as we scoff at explicit dating rules – and with good reason — there’s a certain etiquette that comes with meeting new people in a romantic context. And often, it’s in everyone’s best interest to be aware of these things going into a date. we asked users to share an ”unspoken rule of dating” that no one wants to admit to, and people responded with a number of uncomfortable truths.
Here are six unspoken rules of the dating world:

1. Your standards shift based on how attracted you are to someone. Much as we would all like to think that a date’s looks don’t matter, they do (to an extent). Specifically, you’ll put up with more frustrating behavior from someone you are attracted to — physically and otherwise — than someone you are not.

2. Dating success often comes down to dumb luck. As one user wrote: “A lot of people look at dating as a science, with calculations, and facts and figures. It’s not science, the probability of finding someone that is right for you bottles down a lot to luck and timing.” Timing really is everything.

3. Everybody ”plays games,” whether it’s getting into a power struggle when the check comes or waiting to admit your feelings until the other person does first.

4. Dating will always suck at some point. Whether or not you’re happy being single, the process of dating is stressful and things rarely work out immediately. As one Redditor put it, it’s more than likely that you’ll encounter at least one of thefollowing situations during the span of your dating life:
Falling hard for someone who doesn’t notice you, meeting someone wonderful who you click instantly with who is already taken, having someone lead you on only to use you for sex or attention with no intention of progressing the relationship the way you’d want to, investing in someone only to find out they’re a total asshole, having to reject someone who is a good person because there is no feelings on your part, being cheated on or getting dumped because your [partner] found someone they like better etc.

5. Race matters, particularly when online dating. Data from OKCupid has shown that a user’s race and the race of the people they are messaging affect the likelihood that he or she will receive a response. OKCupid specifically found that, compared to users of other races, black women write back most frequently and white men get the highest number of responses when they send messages.

6. Nobody is completely themselves on a first date. While it’s always best to be honest with a potential new partner, everyone has certain cards that they play close to the chest. Furthermore, being true to yourself doesn’t mean putting absolutely everything out there right away. As one user wrote, “You can be honest without giving a full 411 on every personal flaw you have. Being honest doesn’t meanreenacting your life story to everyone you meet.”

Beware: most of these involve their junk.

 1. Hang a towel off their penises.
The shower isn’t officially over until a guy uses his semi-erect penis as an impromptu towel rack. Whether or not it’s successful is something he will take to his grave.

2. Dry their balls with a blow-dryer.
Putting a blow-dryer under your towel is the man equivalent of a pig rolling around in mud.

3. Tinker.
Does that coffee table look unbalanced? Is the heater making a weird noise? Time to take some stuff off and put it back on and then place hands firmly on hips with a heavy sigh. That didn’t do anything.

4. Tuck their penises between their legs.
It doesn’t matter if they already know what it looks like to have a fake vagina, they just do it sometimes.

5. Rub their stomachs.
Maybe they’re admiring their own abs or maybe just petting their fields of stomach hair, but this feels amazing.

6. Try to go down on themselves.
Every guy has tried to suck his own penis at least once. The fear of almost snapping their necks in an attempt to auto-fellate themselves scares them into sticking with regular masturbation.

7. Eat something without a bowl/dish/proper utensils.
Paper towels, regular towels, a magazine, a box cutter, a pocket knife, their hands. These are the place settings of a man determined not to wash dishes.

8. Flex.
Men will catch themselves in a mirror and just see how their muscles are doing. It’s like a lipstick check except way more embarrassing if they get caught.

9. Think about what they would do if the building they were in was attacked by terrorists.
Blame Die Hard for this one, but men will daydream about how they would defend their house or office from a major threat, even if all the survival instincts they have were gleaned off of three weeks of Boy Scouts in fourth grade.

10. Create arbitrary challenges for themselves.
Can they get this tinfoil into the garbage from across the kitchen? Can they balance 13 dirty dishes on one hand as they carry them out of the bedroom? It doesn’t matter that these are self-imposed, they must find out.

11. Sing. It’s almost always rap or Pavarotti.

True or False

Good communication in a romantic relationship (or any relationship, for that matter) is key. But let’s face it: there are certain questions and subjects that are awkward and uncomfortable to broach — even for the closest couples.

Check out some of the best questions we saw — some trivial and others more substantial — below:
1) What is the biggest lie you have ever told your spouse?

2) What are the little things that your partner could do for you to make yousmile and feel happy?

3) What do you want for your birthday? (Seriously. It’s killing me.)

4) What really happened during your bachelor party?

5) Why in the world would you marry an idiot like that?

6) How would you honestly describe your S.O. to other people?

7) How’s your sex life? Are you satisfied?

8) What does your husband/wife do that bothers you the most?

The World Health Organisation had placed a global ban on the use of chloroquine and Artesunate in 2005.

Nigerians have been advised against the use of Chloroquine and Artesunate for the treatment of malaria.
Nnenna Ezeigwe, National Coordinator, National Malaria …

She, however, recommended that people should take only Artemisinin Combination Therapy, ACTs, when they test positive for malaria.

“If your test result is positive, take only Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACTs). Do not treat malaria with chloroquine, artesunate or other monotherapies.
“The ACT with green leaf is good quality and affordable; Ask for it,’’ she said.
When contacted, Adeline Osakwe, Deputy Director, Pharmacovigilance, Food and Drugs Information Centre, NAFDAC, said the use of chloroquine and artesunate in Nigeria was being gradually phased out.

Francesc "Tito" Vilanova i Bayó (17 September 1968 – 25 April 2014) was a Spanish footballer who played as a central midfielder, and manager.

The ex-central midfielder was admitted to hospital on Thursday following a downturn in his health which required an operation on his stomach, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirming the trainer was "fighting" for his life.

However, Vilanova, whose post-playing career was plagued by cancer, passed away on Friday afternoon.

Vilanova's public health problems began during his final season as Pep Guardiola's assistant when he was diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland.

He took over from his long-time friend for the 2012-13 season but suffered a relapse just six months into his tenure as head coach.

He underwent surgery in December 2012, with Jordi Roura taking his place on the bench while he recovered in New York, before returning in March 2013 to see out the rest of the reason and guide Barca to La Liga glory.

However, his continued health problems saw him step down as coach of the Catalans last summer, with Gerardo Martino taking the reins in his place.

Playing career

Born in Bellcaire d'Empordà, Girona, Catalonia, Vilanova emerged in the youth ranks of local FC Barcelona, but left the La Liga giants in 1990 unable to break through into the first team. His next club was also in his native region, UE Figueres, with the player helping the team to its best-ever Segunda División classification in the 1991–92 season (third place); the club would eventually face Cádiz CF in the promotion play-offs, losing 1–3 on aggregate.

Subsequently Vilanova moved to the top level with Celta de Vigo, but appeared rarely over the course of three full seasons, returning to division two in 1995 and representing CD Badajoz, RCD Mallorca – contributing with ten games as the Balearic Islands side promoted to the top flight – UE Lleida and Elche CF, retiring in December 2001 with lowly UDA Gramenet in his native region.

During his time at Lleida, in a 1998 Copa Catalunya game against Barcelona, coached by José Mourinho who swapped responsibilities with head coach Louis van Gaal during the tournament, Vilanova scored a goal, becoming the first player to net against a team directed by the Portuguese.
