Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC, yesterday quizzed former governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Murtala Nyako, over alleged criminal conspiracy, stealing, abuse of office and money laundering.

Nyako, one of the harsh critics of former President Goodluck Jonathan, was impeached by the House of Assembly for abuse of office. He was one of the seven Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors, who staged a walk out during the party’s convention.

He subsequently defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, along with four other governors. Impeccable sources at the headquarters of the antigraft body in Abuja, told National Mirror that Nyako was arrested when he willingly turned himself in.

The embattled former governor fled the country to evade arrest shortly after his impeachment and only returned to the country on Saturday. On arrival, it was gathered, a team of EFCC interrogators drilled him for several hours.

When he arrived at our facility in Abuja, the former governor was quizzed by our operatives for several hours. As far as I know, Nyako was detained and might be released tomorrow (today) if he is lucky,” a source said.

It will be recalled that Nyako was declared wanted by the EFCC after he repeatedly failed to honour the commission’s invitation to answer corruption charges levelled against him over six months ago. Another source told National Mirror that Nyako’s decision to return home was boosted by the assumption of office by President Muhammadu Buhari.

All efforts to get the head, Media and Publicity of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, to confirm the arrest proved abortive as he switched off his mobile telephone.

As at the time of filing this report, his telephone was yet to come alive. It is also not clear whether the former governor was granted administrative bail or would spend the night at the commission’s cell.
