Ice Cube’s getting N.W.A. back together for one huge show in Los Angeles later this month. He’ll reunite with MC Ren and DJ Yella to perform tracks from Straight Outta Compton at the BET Experience show at the Staples Center on June 27th, he revelead to Rolling Stone in a recent interview.
He told Rolling Stone that Dr. Dre isn’t scheduled to participate in the reunion, but “you never know.” If he does, it will be the first time all surviving members have performed together as N.W.A. in 26 years.
“It’s like, I hope he blesses us with his presence,” Ice Cube said. “But if not, I’ve been rockin’ for a long time without anybody. So whoever shows up, I’m still gonna rock. Whoever don’t show up, we still gonna rock.” The band’s fifth member, Eazy-E, died in 1995.
Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, Snoop Dogg, Schoolboy Q, Miguel and Nicki Minaj are also slated to perform during the BET Experience, which runs from June 25-28.
Ice Cube alos hinted that the group may be working on new music for the soundtrack to Straight Outta Compton, the biopic about N.W.A. due out Aug. 14. “We’re definitely dibbling and dabbling, so to speak,” he said.
The film stars Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Cube, and Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre.
”You’ll get the sex, drugs, and rock & roll that go with a music biopic, but we go beyond the surface,” director F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) told EW. “While there is a lot of very specific talk about pushing back against the system and delving into street culture, these guys had lives outside of that.”
